Default Asking the experts: steering wheel swap

Will a steering wheel from a 1986 944 fit the earlier (pre-85.5) 944's?

I have heard the splines are different between early and later models.

Appreciate your responses! I get more information from Rennlisters than anywhere else (in the known universe).

correct me if im wrong guys

924 is different than 944 and 911 from same years is different as well. im not sure on 928s. which is odd since the wheel designs are the same between 3 spoke early wheels and 4 spoke wheels

but yes to answer your question. all 944 steering wheels will change out. i actually modified my early car to run the 4 spoke air bag steering wheel.

FWIW if I recall correctly the MOMO adapter for the 83-85 944 is different from the one in my 86 944. I seem to learning that the hard way. So I assume the wheels will not swap over. I am sure someone will confirm, but if all else fails let me know and I will see if my spare 85.5 wheel will bolt onto my 83 parts car to be sure the combo would work for you.

Michael, if you want to go to all the trouble of seeing if the later wheel will fit, I'd be most appreciative!

Two replies, conflicting answers. Oh, well!

Thanks for the offer Michael! Be interested in knowing what you learn.

The late wheel should fit but the slip ring is different from the early car in that the plastic tab that cancels the turn signal is slightly longer and on the opposite side. It will fit but make a very annoying squeezing noise and your turn signal will not cancel properly. You can swap your early slip ring into the late wheel and it will work just fine.

Ah, yep that explains why the MOMO adapter is different between early and late. Now I remember why I had to swap the adapter out when I got it with a MOMO wheel off Ebay.

Thanks for the clarification. So the wheel WILL fit but your turn signal cancel will be way off with modification.

In my 86 I have a steering wheel from a 924S (so a pre 85.5 style steering wheel), there were a few scews holding the turn signal cancelation nub in place, and I just took them off, moved it 180 degrees, and then put it back together.

So if the turn signal cancelation nub (tab or whatever you want to call it) is removeable, then swapping an 86 wheel into a pre 85.5 should be doable.
