I'm betting your oil leak is either the upper bal. shaft rear o-ring OR the oil sep o-rings OR mostly likely both. When I resealed my upper b/s, it was a mess in there, oil caked all over. Took forever to clean it off. Both of the above mention o-rings where brittle and had shrunk. When I went to peel them off, they just cracked in half. I guess that's what 14 years of being a few inches from a turbo will do. Since the reseal, it's nice, clean, and dry.

Tom,

Can you guide me to a good description of the balance shaft o-ring replacement and the oil separator o-ring replacement. Does the turbo need to be removed to replace these?? I had the intake manifold off to get a closer look today, but still can't tell exactly where the origin of the leak is. There are a number of shields, brackets, and hoses in the way of getting in there. Also, the rear plug area and edge of my balance shaft look dry, I don't see any oil in the grooves of the plug. Does this mean its my separator, or could I be missing a leak from under the balance shaft housing between it and the block where I can't see. Thanks.

David, The turbo must come off along with the downpipe. Those heat shields & hoses must come off too. Once they're out the way, you've got a clear shot to the upper b/s & OAS. If you pull the b/s cover off, you'll see the end cap with the o-ring around it. Once you remove the oil sep heat shield, there are 3 bolts to remove and the OAS will then pull straight off the block. Then you'll see the 2 o-rings on the fittings that insert into the block. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
