I'm guessing that you are going to have some major transitional response with those wide wheels and relatively narrow tires. Be careful the first few laps.
That's the idea. When I went from the stock 16x7/8" Fuchs on my 951 to 16x10.25" HRE-504 rims (with same 225/245 tires), I was astounded. I had swapped rims between run groups at Laguna Seca and on the next session out, I literally flew off the track on the INSIDE of turn-1. That's because the wider rims provided such quicker turn-in response that my usual steering inputs was more than necessary. Also mid-turn corrections are so immediate, it's almost telepathic!

I've thought about a wider fender for my 951 down the road. I saw GT Racing's website and see they offer a carbon fiber wide body front and rear. Has anyone used this? How well does it fit?
Here's a picture of Paul Bloomberg's widebody 951. Looks pretty good from the photos:

He's got a 335/30-18 tire in the back on an 18x12" rim!

I'd like to reduce the steering stop a little
Danno - I use a modified Porsche rack on a race car. We limit steering travel with a split clamp on either end of the rack.

Oh yeah? What do these split-clamps look like and how do I get some? How do you install them on the rack? Photos? Thanks -danno

Good idea! Lock collars sound like a much easier way to limit steering movement than putting matterial onto the shaft. I would imagine that you would use a lock collar like this:

These are available from this manufacturer in these sizes:

Part # Description
759100 1" bore 2-piece steel 1/4" keyway
759200 1 1/4" bore 2-piece steel 1/4" keyway
759300 1" bore 2-piece alum. 1/4" keyway
759400 1 1/4" bore 2-piece alum. 1/4" keyway
759500 30mm bore 2-piece alum. 1/4" keyway
669600 1" bore 1-piece alum. 1/4" keyway
669700 1 1/4" bore 1-piece alum. 1/4" keyway
759600 35mm bore 2-piece alum. 8mm keyway
759700 1 3/8" bore 2-piece alum. 1/4" keyway
759800 40mm bore 2-piece alum. 8mm keyway

You should be able to get these from any decent kart racing shop. I don't think there are any karting shops in Santa Barbara, but there are a glut of them in the LA area and probably at least one in Santa Maria.

Obviously, measure the od of your rack, get the right size collar, put the collar where you want to limit steering movement. I imagine the hardest part is making sure that the boot does not get fouled up on the collar. If you have no boot problems, I imagine this would be a five minute job.

Looks like Mcmaster-Carr has a much better selection of sizes, both id and width.

Danno- sorry I didn't follow up on this for you, but you guys have got if figured out. I don't have the habit of brousing the forum full time yet. If you'd still like pic's, email me and I'll take some & post when I return from vacation (1/28). My car might even have hose clamps there now, but we don't use boots or power assist. A-Mac in Santa Clara made mine, 408.727.9288. They are good folks, and I have no idea what they'd sell you a set for.

BTW, I like the pictures of your car with the new tires/wheels alongside. Perhaps you'll start a new fad and all those PhoneDials will find new life as spacers...

I run 8 inch front 225 45, 9.5 inch rears 255 40 17". Standard 993 offset. No probelms yet, and lots of room in the rear for more rubber.

I personally would not want anything wider than 225's on the fronts for a street car. Big fatties up front can make it wander pretty good, and be quite noisy!

what exactly is an offset?
It's the distance between the centerline of the rim and the hub-mounting surface. Check out the 944 Wheels-FAQ section on my website on how to measure wheels: 951 RacerX website

Gary, please post me a picture on where you clamp those collars onto your steering rack. Thanks - danno

Danno, here are pic's. As I mentioned, my split clamp has been superceeded with a hose clamp, as it was lighter, easier to adjust, and caused less interference as I tried to cover with a boot. I was never succesful at converting inner tube remnants into a propering rack boot, and am too cheap to buy a Porsche boot to hack up. The rack has been shortened and we don't use power assist. For a street car, I'd suggest using a spilt clamp and clamp the boot directly to the split clamp, shortening the original boot if necessary (I assume the bellows of the boot will have a larger I.D. than the small boot end).

The images are looking up from underneath. The car is awaiting cleanup before its next outing.

JPEG is just amazing. Who'd have thought that so much dirt could be resolved with only 92kb of data.
