Red face Why doesn't my AC work???

All I can tell you is that when I push in the AC switch, the light comes on while I'm holding it in but nothing happens (i.e I can't hear the comp. kick in). When I leave go of the switch, the light goes out and nothing happens. Bad switch??? Bad relay??? Bad comp. is overriding the switch????

I have no clue.

Thanks,

Craig

I have a similar problem.

Mine used to work, but now does not. I have heard that if the freon gets to low the compressor will not kick in - sort of a self protection mechanism to keep from burning up the compressor.

Mine has not worked since I bought the car with 28K miles 2 years ago. I have also been told that if the freon is low it will not come on. If someone knows how to check and possibly refill with freon I would appreciate knowing how. I have been told by my shop it will be $200-$300 for the service. Apparently freon is taxed at 1,000% to prevent use of it.

My problem turned out to the the wire going to the switch at the compressor, it is a single wire with a blade connector on the driver side of the compressor. it kinda hangs out in the wind, and mine blew off. Reconnected and A/C is as good as ever.

To check the freon level look in the glass on the top of the drier. Someplace in the manual it tells you what color it is suppose to be. The color indicats the condition of the freon.

RE: A/C service -

The reason servicing air conditioning systems has escalated, particularly older systems with R12, is due to environtmental issues over storage and waste removal. Dealers and service stations that perform the service are monitored for compliance and pay large fees (and fines).
