Post Rear Seal + Auto Dampner = $$$

Well I've gone from a $1K rear seal job, to $2K because my dampner is cracked, and should be replaced while they have it all apart. This is disheartning

I figured I'd avoid the extra cost of clutch repairs with an automatic, but it looks like its just as expensive, either way.

I really like this car but my maintenance costs are getting out of hand. You guys that wrench your own are truly the only people who should own one of these cars.

So any suggestions on how I should break the news with the wife

TomH - My car cost me $6500 to buy, and I have nearly $14,000 in a rebuild and miscellaneous parts and items. Granted, it's a high performance machine, but I had no idea when buying it that it could cost THAT much to maintain.

Automatics don't save you money. There are little clutches and disc packs in there that WILL eventually go bad, and instead of a $1500 clutch job, you end up with a $2200 automatic transmission rebuild. The up-side is that any competent Porsche mechanic can do your clutch replacement, the downside to autos is that you usually have to get joe's tranny shoppe to do the work. *heh*

I don't know if I'd call your expenses comforting, but I can see how it all adds up. I think I'm about $5K now, and I've only had it since Nov. (I paid $7K for it).

Granted, I did the no-no and bought this car on a whim, with no service records, and no pre-inspection. Ok, OK, stop laughing.

But I do enjoy it and had planned to hold onto it for a while anyway.
