I wouldn't be concerned about the slight mixing. But, do you have a tranny oil cooler? If not, the 2 quarts should have been plenty. The fill level is supposed to be 6-8mm below the top hole (except 968). The oil cooler equipped models can use a bit more than 2 quarts depending on how well they are drained.
Good Luck!

I don't think so, but I wasn't looking for it. I would assume it would stand out if it was there? Mechanic was measuring the 6-8 mm using the super accurate "finger-rometer". Thanks for putting my paranoid delusions to rest.

Dan in Pasadena,
It was not a grind, and not a crunch. It was a grunch. And it's pretty much as you describe. It got better (especially when cold) but isn't gone entirely. I suspect my first gear synchro is going, so this change to synthetic is mainly to buy time before replacement (hopefully decades). I used the GL5 75W90NS, but I'm wondering if I should have used the GL4. Maybe next summer I'll change it...
cheers

PaulC, WRT the NAPA synthetic... it may be just fine, but face it, those guys are more concerned with cost than quality. Likely it comes from a major refiner, but may or may not be the same stuff that the major retails under their own brand name.
For the few bucks saved, just get the Redline. It's a proven product in our cars. If you're in / near a large city, you can get it locally. If not, Jason & Skip at Paragon (www.paragon-products.com)can get it to you quick enough.
I'll let Skip & others suggest which Redline product to get; I ran the MTL very happily for the ~55K miles / 6 years that I had my '88 na.
Jim, dam', what's that bright light in the east??? 'tain't Juliet, that's for sure...

[quote] , I used teflon tape on the plugs.

Dont
The plugs are tapered thread, the bore is parrallel.
At the moment the plug thread contacts the bore thread, the tape in front of it will be cut-off.
Now a (small) piece of PTFE tape will start its travel through the diff housing.
(Dont ask how I know, fitting things together is part of the job...)
The system is designed for "no tape" use.
Just do not overtighten.
Take Care

Don't use teflon tape. Just clean the plugs and put a drop or two of oil on them before insertion. I have used redline MT-90, Amsoil AGT GL-4. These work great for the syncros. If you find you have too much chatter in the diff add some GL-5.

Any suggestions which tranny oil to use for a '94 968 (with LSD). I have 110,000km's on the car and am starting to get that notchy crunch when cold. Anything I can do to smooth it out without hurting other components?
