Seems my '84 944 is overdue for a timing belt (& balance shaft, etc) replacment. Probably do a new water pump too for piece of mind. This is the first time I've had this done, and I'm curious how much this should cost. So far I have been quoted about $1100.00 for belts, new wp, and labor. I'm sure there will be incidentals on top of that.
Also, anyone in the Maryland/DC/No Va area have any feedback on local shops that you care to email me?
Thanks! -C-

seems a little high, mine was done for about $300 with out water pump, not sure how much a water pump is, but i would get a rebuilt one dont waste money on a new one.
Just checked, $250 for rebuilt pump and adapter kit at pelican parts, add some labor and your lookin at $600-$700, so $1000 still seems high.

I disagree on the rebuilt water pump. They are known to fail in ~10,000 miles. Also, the factory updated the design more than 6 times. Don't you want the newest, best design?

Thanks for the feedback/reality check. I kinda got the idea that the shop that quoted me the price tends to cater to the rich (not me). I have scheduled service w/ another shop that is reputed to be pretty decent. W/ a new wp, gaskets, thermostat, etc, they are closer to $800, which is a bit better, since I know there will be unrelated incidentals once we get into it (haven't had service in awhile).
Call me paranoid, but I think I do want to go w/ the new (vs rebuilt) water pump. I have had reasonable luck w/ rebuilt parts in the past... but. Have to see what others think about this one.

The three best shops that I know of (primarily for 968s and 944s) are Porsche Pitstop, Dr John Motorsport, and IMA Motorsports. Ivan at IMA is very good at what he does; he maintained a friend's 951 and now his 968. Chris at Dr. John Motorsport is a great guy... good rates too ($65/hr I think). Pitstop has been around for awhile, pretty conveniently located (off Eisenhower Ave in Alexandria). Hope this helps.

You may want to check with German Auto Service in Jessup, MD depending on where you are in the D.C. MD area! # 410-799-5787. I had a new water pump, timing belt, belt tensioners, cam/iderler rollers replaced, along with new front engine seals for 1,150.00.
