So got a call from my mechanic that well the motor is firing now yet we seem to have another issue and its highlighted in this video. I didnt have the opportunity to record the motor itself. My thought is that it could be the lifters on the motor due to how long the motor has been sitting (say abt 8 months). Yet when I brought it up with my mechanic he informed me that he let the motor run and supposedly its not that. He wants to pull the pan and check the bottom end. He and I are both not sure what could be causing this... Thoughts, rennlist?

PS: Motor was swapped over from a running 944 and didnt have this issue before the swap.

Lifters, had the same exact sound only louder turned out to be lifters weren't getting enough oil... also didn't help my crank bolt back out lol.

So what should i do to fix this? Hearing abt seafoam and ATF... Also is the OC 75 filter with ~5qts of Oil a good source of the cause?

~6qts oil, make sure its got plenty of zinc. This happened to my car a while ago and it was a lifter. Just needed to break free (after it had sat for a while).

I know I sound like a broken record (just posted this on another thread) pop the valve cover off and make sure you don't have a broken valve spring.

I don't feel like the motor "broke" anything. This is the first time it's ran in the past year and the motor was from a good car. I drove it home before the motor was pulled and it showed no problem. My thought is tht it's hard to break a motor without running it...

Not looking forward to changing my oil in my mechanics parking lot in rain but oh well. Will grab a OC 147 or a standard size filter and 6qts after class

I had a parts car that sounded like it had a rod knock. It turned out to be a very loose cam gear and worn out keyway. the pistons were just tapping the valves enough to knock the soot off of the piston tops. The very good P car garage I obtained the car from thought it was a rod bearing.

So talked with my mechanic yesterday and he mentioned that it isnt a lifter but its something hitting the crank?... He suggests spining the motor with a socket on the crank and listening with a stethoscope. Yet if its not this, I should check timing. If my belt is too loose could it be causing that sound?

I still vote checking the belt. It will only take a few min.

Dry lifters can sometimes take quite a while to pump back up, and sometimes you need to drive around and rev the motor a bit. As long as the oil is full and not ridiculously dirty, I'm not sure that will do much. Can't imagine the motor was yanked from the other car and installed in yours without new oil, was it?? Not sure what could be making that noise in the crankcase other than rod knock (or something broken loose) -- did you see/hear the motor in the other car before it was pulled? If didn't have rod knock before, chance are it doesn't now. Very difficult to diagnose engine sounds based on short compressed video clips, so consider the possibility of exhaust leaks too. In contrast to the other things, exhaust leaks might be a direct result of the installation process and often sound similar...

@Tom: The donor car was driven home (6mi) before the swap happened. The only noticeable sound was the back wheels rubbing (it was totaled out 944). I drained out the oil before the swap so there is new oil in the pan. (Running the OC75 with 10W-40 (5qts and im not sure if thats the correct weight thats in it)). Im about to head down to my mechanics and check if the belt some how got too loose. My mechanic "let it run" and then ruled out lifters. So im not sure how much time its been on and what all has been done to rule out some possible problems...

@911Crazy I did think abt the TDI swap, yet I dont have unlimited funds and copious amounts of free time...
