the control unit should be located in the drivers footwell, behind the center console. not 100% sure because mine is an 86, but this is the common position on the front engine cars

On an '86 it's up under the far left side of the dash, above the hood release, mounted against the outside wall. It's a silver-colored (aluminum) box with a black connector plugged into it.
