![Question](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I have a question I was hoping someone could clear up.
I have an 83 944 with a weak 4th gear synchro. It shifts smoothly when it is cold, but will grind when it has been driven for a while.
My brother has an 86 VW Scirocco which has a weak 2nd gear synchro. It does the exact oppisite. It will grind when cold and the problem goes away as it warms up.
I don't know much about the internal differences between these two transmissions (i'm sure they exist!!) the scirocco is front wheel drive.
I was curious why they act differently.
another question is if this condition could possibly be improved by using thicker or thinner gear oil? I assume the temperature is affecting the viscosity of the gear oil and either helping the condition(scirocco) or the oppisite(944)
Is this an option? If so what do you recommend? Thanks, Ben

Try changing the oil in your gear box to a premium grade like SWEPCO . I have read where a individual was having a problem like what you are reporting and switched from a leading syn. brand to SWEPCO 201 and it cured his problem.
You can find SWEPCO at www.ritegear.com
