Talking insurance surprise

So I called Progressive today to check on what kind of insane rates they were going to perpetrate when I buy my 944. I just paid for my whole policy for the year, so I was prepared to drop another few hundred to change cars.

My current car that I'm selling to buy the 85.5 is a 1978 Mercedes 280E. It was pretty cheap to insure, cheaper than the camry it replaced a year or two ago.

I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the policy for the 944 would be $160 LESS than it was for the Mercedes. This seems contrary to a lot of stories I've heard (mainly from my family, trying to convince me that "Porsches are expensive") about insurance on 944s. Maybe I just got lucky, or maybe things are changing as far as prices go. Color me happy.

It would be interesting to do a survey. I pay ~$900 a year for $0 deductible comp, $250 deductible collision, 50/100/50 liability etc. With State Farm. 31 yr. old male, never been pulled over (yet), City of San Francisco. This is about $350 more than my old land cruiser, but still reasonable I think.

We did a thread like this last fall, it may be in the archives unless it was lost in "The Great Rennlist Crash of '01". The outcome was that cost vary from state to state, $45/mo. wouldn't buy coverage for a skateboard in NJ

My 91 944S2 Cab cost less for insurance than my 97 Civic did. I just purchased a BMW 540i and unlike the Porsche the insurance is alot.

Are the streets that much safer in California?

Are the drivers that much better?

Are the thieves that much more scarce?

I am 34, no points ( knock on wood...twice) and no accidents ( ...make that three times) and I pay $900 a year for JUST liability and based on a max of 5000 miles per year ( it's my 3rd car and not driven daily).....I'll add collision after I've had it painted and that should make my insurance atleast 3 times more than Joe R.......what's wrong with this picture?

PS - Mine is insured thru Prudential

I think a lot of the differences in CA and NJ is the minimum levels of coverage (liability, personal-injury, medical, etc.). Just by fidding with those policy payout limits, I've gotten quotes of $500-1500/yr from the same insurance company on the same day. There's also uninsured-motorist coverage that a lot of insurance companies tack on unless you specifically tell them to take it off.

Shhh... you weren't supposed to tell the Progressive 951/944 secret.

You should see how little they want for an '86 930 for a male 24 year old with a few tickets. It's actually not much more!

Of course, I imagine it would be quite a fight if it came to claim time!

You know, the relatively low cost might reflect fewer claims. Yeah it's a sports car, but it seems to me from following this board that P-car owners love their cars, don't abuse them, don't see them as disposable, and so treat them carefully. Also, let's face it, the performance capabilities of these vehicles may just as well get you out of trouble as get you in it, especially when the drivers are serious about knowing how to handle their cars well.

Trade you driving records!

25, No accidents, 1 claim from the fire, and 8 points from 4 speeding tickets, one in the 951.

I pay close to $2400 a year, full coverage, $500 deduct, and slightly higher than normal limits because of what I have in it.

I most could insure a 911TT on that!

Oh.. and I have Progressive.

Up here in ol' Canada I pay a"boat" $5 less per month than I do on my Suzuki Sidekick. I pay like $50 a month. I was amazed!

18-2 points- $500 deductable - $3,200 a year. (AAA)

and I can't change out of AAA because they give my dad some deal for his mountaineer where "HE" saves $5 a month.

I had progressive insurance until I filed a claim for some vandalism. Some jerk scratched my 951's left front fender and the roof with some tool/ knife. The agent just casually looked at the damage and said "I'm not going to repaint your car. Those scratches look like your initials!" I could have ripped his smart *** head off and told him I paid for coverage and just wanted the problem corrected - did not ask for a complete paint job. He would only agree to cutting me a check for about $400.00 which was payable to myself and my leinholder bank.
I now have Geico and am very happy.

I have Progressive. I pay @$1000 per year for 2 cars (full coverage on the Porsche and liability only on my 1987 Neon ACR daily driver). Progressive is pretty good, much better than those State Farm militia men...

I live in VA, have full coverage on my Porsche Turbo S, and comp on my Riviera. I have 9 speeding tickets, and pay 1250 dollars a year.

Not bad I don't think, especially since I'm 22.
