/spare wheel.

just wondering if there is any difference between the collapsable tire-type one over the 944/968 model ranges. Are the 968 ones lighter or just red? is there a difference in the tire, as in did better ones supersede older types? A 968-type red one has come up for sale locallly.

Well there is a steel wheeled spare and an alloy one, the later cars tended to come with the alloy one and IIRC it is lighter. My 944S was missing it's spare so i had to sub the steel one out of my 924S.

All of the tires on these suck and are ment to just get you out of harms way (ie off the highway) at 45mph or less.

I don't know if the rims were improved or just restyled but what i think is most important is the age of the tire . Since it's hardly ever used people overlook the age of the spare tire and after 25 years most are pretty much useless . If you think you need to have a space saver i suggest you either change the tire or get the newest one you can find. I ditched mine a long time ago ,now i carry only a can of tire sealant.
This is how my space saver looked when i first inflated it ,needless to say it went in the garbage .

yes I totally agree. i had to use my spare 3 yrs ago first the first time in my ownership and I had my puncture repaired within 8 hrs. I didnt trust that tire at all.

I think the alloy wheels (without tires) may be worth something to late 356 and 912 owners.
