Question how long do motor mounts last?

Hi:

I brought my car to the garage because I had some vibration issue. My repair guys just called me and told me that my motor mounts have gone bad and need to be replaced.

My problem is that my motor mounts were just replaced in 1998, and they are the new modified OEM version. Is it possible that the motor mounts went bad that quickly???

How many miles were put on the car in that time?

Unfortunately, yes. For two very specific reasons: 1) the right damper is subject to the heat of the header and deteriorates quickly (left mount also suffers this same fate on Turbo cars). 2) if you have any oil leaks, especially power steering, this will break down the rubber very quickly leading to collapse and failure.

While they *should* last longer than 3 years, that is very subject to the environment they operate in. Be sure you have no leaks, and that all the heat shielding is in place to protect the right mount.

Good Luck!

25,000 miles is on the low side for replacement, but as Skips says, the operating conditions will vary.

I've seen a range of estimates of miles for replacement. I recall seeing a recommendation of changing as low as every 30,000 miles -- basically as often as changing the timing belt -- but I couldn't find the source for it. So while 25,000 is still a bit on the low side, it's not completely out of the question. I notice you're driving a Turbo S -- you give it a bit of workout from time time, perhaps?

Cool

I have read that there are several mount to choose from... Grey mounts indicate an upgrade, orange is even better, I think black was the original. Are there any non-liquid filled mounts available?? I saw some solid mounts that looked like they would do the trick, but doesn't that transmit a lot of vibration? I was told they make the shifting really solid and are worth the trade off.. Can this be true?

Thanks,

The 30K number comes from the 944 workshop manuals. I saw that number when looking for torque specs when I replaced the mounts last month. Didn't realize they needed replacing that often.

Is it possible to wrap the mounts with a heat resistant material to shield from heat and chemicals? I was thinking of exhaust system wrap.Any comments?
