Idea 1: See if it will start with a fully charged battery. Maybe there isn't enough juice to sustain both cranking and spark.

Idea 2: might be the ignition switch. Maybe the switch isn't permitting spark when it's in the 'starter engaged' position.

Just wild a$$ guesses... good luck

More info needed... does the starter crank when you turn the key, if so does the engine also turn, or do you just hear the solenoid click, etc, etc....???

try it with one injector unplugged, sounds like your fuel pressure regulator is shot, let us know.

You are going to find this hard to believe but this happened once to me.

That Bosch starter is a "common" design except for our cars it spins the opposite way. Turn it over and watch to see if the engine is turning over the correct direction. In my case the parts guys sold me the wrong starter ..... it fit just fine, just spun the engine backwards. Took forever to figure that out.

But the fact that this problem began before you replaced the starter makes this idea seem like a real long shot.

It could also be the ignition switch, had this problem on a Karmann Ghia, which I believe has the same or a very similarly designed switch.

good luck

The last thing you just wrote kind of stumps me, but my car has been having starting problems too. Have you checked the flywheel sensor?

Did you try it with one injector unplugged?
It may be ceased due to lack of lubrication or similar.
