86 951 Driver

So I wanted to put this in the big forum to get more opnions. I have had a 924S(still miss that car), and a 944 Turbo. I have never owned 3.0 liter variant of the 944/968. I have heard they are great city cars with the low end torque.

I will say I am a 2 stroke nut. I love that gutless low end and big fat midrange and top end pull. So the turbo appeals to me because of that. I also like the Gas mileage I can pull in the turbo on highway trips. I have never sat in a 968. They look neat(still like the front end of a 951/S2 better, but the rear end just looks awesome.

So which one of these cars in stock form is the one to buy/own?

i like the s2 the most. power similar to an early turbo, imo better looks than the 968.

what i like about the 968 is the 6spd manual and the smother rear end, but i doesn't have as much flare as the 944

Buy an 944S2 and add the 968 rear spoiler and get it chipped !

The S2 has an amazingly smooth delivery right through the range from 1500rpm to 6000rpm with no apparent peaking The power delivery is very deceptive ,it doesn't feel so urgent and immediate as the turbo but gets there just as fast.

You'd need a stopwatch to measure the difference in acceleration between the turbo and S2 but they are totally different driver experience in their power delivery.
The S2 is far more predictable and a much more responsive car for town driving and in the short twisty roads especially in the wet imo

I started out thinking 968, as it is much more modern car in many ways, but then found a great example of a S2 and haven't looked back. The S2 was also 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a nice 968. I really enjoy the car and it's great fun to drive.

As noted above, the power is deceptively smooth in its delivery. It would not be confused with a fast car by today's standards but it corners and stops like a 944 should and is a surprisingly good highway cruiser too.

is your S2 chipped speedy ? My first S2 seemed quite quick compared with my 2.5Lux but this latest S2 came with a road/track-day Promax ECU chip and its amazing the difference. The car also has adjustable race suspension all round so it corners like a new car.

Really worth upgrading the suspension and brakes on these old cars ,it gives you the confidence to push the limits a bit

For a completely stock car... 968 all the way. A buddy of mine has one and he drove it from Seattle to Philadelphia and back - averaged nearly 40mpg on the trip. He also has an S2, and all I can say is: If I jump out of my 951 into his 968, it feels like a more refined, civilized verson of pretty much the same car. If I jump from the 951 to the S2 it feels like a dog. It's just so slow compared to my 951 or the 968. That said, I really do prefer the look of the 951/S2 over the 968.. even the back end. I don't think the 968 looks bad, I just think the 951/S2 looks a lot better. But, in completely stock trim, the 968 is definitely the better of the cars.

An S2 with a well maintained and working 968 engine would be the perfect 944 for me. I prefer the looks of the S2 over the 968 and wouldnt want to deal with the extra maintenance and problems of the turbo.

Personally I prefer the power delivery of the S2 to the 968. More agressive.

Lol the power delivery of the S2 versus 968 migth feel more agressive & make you believe you are going fast but don't forget that the the power delivery of the 968 is very deceiving & you are going fast without realizing it.Simple reason is that, at a 1,000 rmp the 968 is already producing 147 pd/ft of torque & at 2,000 rpm pumps out 191 pd/ft of torque a gain of 41 pd/ft.So do the math & you'll find out that by the time you reach the 6.5 rpm red line the S2 will be way behind (talking about stock none modified motor here).But like mention it's a personnal choice ,before buying mine I try a 951 & S2 & myself far prefer the power delivery of the 968 which gather speed without drama,of course lol I'm getting old,long gone are the days of my MGA with a 283 Chevy motor Chevy 3 speed tranny & Buick diff agressive power delivery wasn't the word with that beast,brutal & scary YES.

Not yet. I'm waiting on the Rogue Tuning MAF kit and program, which should be out shortly. Looking forward to it!

I'm using the S2 as an occasional DD and a track car. For now, I'm sticking with a refreshed M030 suspension (may get some LR sways) until I can afford seats/harnesses/roll bar for safety. I've been pretty impressed with the stock brakes and suspsension in two DE's to date, but things can always be improved!
