In reality what they would use is one of the VR based six cylinders that VW,Audi and Porsche all use.

You can get a diesel motor in an R8. 10 cylinders. Think Audi embarrassed a few cars at LeMans with it... just sayin.'

i think one of the best things about the 944 is the fact that it only has 4 cylinders.....

Agreed. I often wonder why the 2.0l 4 is so popular with Turbo applications now as opposed to what Porsche did with the 951

Yeah, soul of the 944 has 4 cylinders. 2.0T, say. In fact the TT coupe doesn't leave a lot of room for a new 944 and when the 4 cylinder Boxster gets here in ~2015, even less room.

The ONLY thing I see about that engine that has anything on even the current 951 engine is DOHC. I am going to guess the redline is higher but base specs do not seem to be an improvement. I WILL say that it does make me think redoing a 2.5+ liter turbo but with DOHC. But hell I still see the STRONG chance the performance will outshine the goldenchild. Glad i am not in marketing....

Put that in a front engined / rear drive package, and you have the makings for one awesome little car.

Although I have become a more dyed in the wool Porsche guy, the one car I would probably put my money on IF I was buying a new car would be the TT RS Audi. The Audi does not have quite the overall styling, nor name appeal of a Porsche, but for really driving, that Audi has to be just super.

The 944 will never come back while the ***** controlling Porsche remain. Porsche of the 80s is gone and Porsche of today sells SUVs and full-size family cars. If they brought back the 944, it would be a nightmare. It would be some ugly 3-door abomination with a hybrid engine and no soul.

Hands town to the guy who created the carrera gt.. a proper race engine in a road car.
Even the successor is a hybrid

The 2.0T from the TTS does better.

Porsche will be announcing a new entry level sports car at the LA Auto show. I am sure it will be 4 cyl. A nice choice for a modern 944 would be the Audi 2.0 T which makes a ton of horse power in the Audi TT. Light and powerful 265 HP, 258 lbs/ft torque, it would make a very nice package.

IMO Bad choice. engine is to small for big potential..

If you look at history, the engine in the 944 turbo has more power output then the equivalent 4cyl turbo..
and to today, look at engine sizes and power output and the 944Ts has more..

If they do a new entry car, im sure it'll have at least 250hp n/a and a turbo version over 300hp

Grab the 6.75L V8 Bently biturbo from the VAG parts bin, chop it in half like they did with the 928 V8 for our cars, increase bore slightly to make a 3.5L turbo 16v 4cyl

Hmmm...interesting. I thought they delayed that. Maybe they'll announce the 4-cyl Boxster in LA? Or the Cajun SUV?

An interesting insight on Mueller's thoughts on a 4-cyl Porsche in Excellence June 2011, for reference.
