Have any CA residents purchased an out of state car and registered it in CA? I know you can bring one in if you move here, but looking at the dmv site, there aren't many exceptions (divorce settlement, replacing a stolen CA car) for residents to purchase a 49 state car and bring it to CA.

it'll have to meet CA regs for emissions or if it qualifies, under classic registration(limited miles, different insurance) you only have to meet the requirements from the year it was built.
good luck with cali.

Though I have not brought one in from out of state, I can say Cali is fairly unsympathetic to the sportscar. All three Porsches I've owned thus far have seemed to cause problems for whoever was doing my paperwork- some of the issues are still not resolved.
I wish you good luck with bringing one in. My uncle has done it with a couple of classics and had no problems so it's probably hit or miss whether or not you'll have any issues

It's not a problem. CA used to charge a fee, but they were successfully sued and had to refund the fees with interest. I got a nice check because of that.
The car will have to pass Cali emissions, as long as it does that there aren't any problems.

Yes I did this 10 years ago for my 951 and 3 years ago for my 08 Boxster. As soon as you have the car here you have to take it to a smog station and have it smogged. You have to pass this.
Once you have this done make DMV appt. They will inpect the car and look for a emission sticker. It must say "Meets all 50 states".

Pretty sure the car doesn't need the 50 state sticker anymore. The older cars won't have it, as they would've either had a 49 state sticker or the Cali emissions sticker.
As long as the car passes cali emissions, you should be fine. I brought in a 49 state car that way and had no issues.
