Default Waterpump failing

Is this the sound of a water pump failing?

Ive had the front cover off and it seems to be coming from the water pump - could be a roller though I guess.

Do you know when the last water pump/roller job was done?

FWIW...if I even thought my WP was going, I would swap it out.

+1 If anything seizes there you'll break your timing belt, then you're rebuilding your head! Not cheap!

Both James and F40LM have valid points!

I would pick up a mechanics stethoscope (they are cheap), pull the cover again and probe around until I found the offending component. These cars are expensive enough without throwing parts at them.

IMO the only way to know "for sure" is to release belt tension and check the play by hand. Check for leaks too. By then you'll be almost halfway to replacement, so... It does sound suspiciously like the WP.

I dove in there today and took off all the belts bar timing and I am able to turn the water pump by hand pretty easily with the belt on so I think the belt is too loose and thats what is causing the noise.

i did the belts by hand about a year ago and i thought I had retensioned them but I may not have.

When i turn the pump pulley on its own - it turns smoothly and there is no play whatsoever.
