Default 944S Head Replacment

I just picked up my 1st 944 today, she's a bit rough but solid in most of the
places. The car did suffer a tensioner failure though and needs a head.

I will be doing this job in my home shop but most of my tools are at the
dealer were I work. Can someone give me a tool list so I don't need to
run back and fourth chasing tools?

Also if there are any tips or tricks that would be helpful that would be great.

Here's a few pics of my new toy.

I recently did this myself. It should be your usual suspects of tools, all metric of course in addition to a good set of cheesehead tools, need that for the camshaft and i think also for the head bolts, or were they allen's... so a good set of cheesehead and allen tools. And a torque wrench to put it back together.

I'd also recommend a flywheel lock tool.

check out Clark's Garage for the procedure and the list of tools though most of it refers to the 8 valve engine.

and when you're in there, if you wanna swap out the lifters you can use VW 16v lifters, they're a lot cheaper and fit like a charm. The internal parts number for the is 034 109 309 AD. I got mine from Travis at Rennbay. I paid 170 for 16 brand new INA lifters. Worth the swap though your car has less mileage than mine.

Nice find!
Did you end up at $2150 sale price?
Hard to stomach all the Craigslist 16-valves around the country with tensioner failure catastrophies... And only 76k on yours.

Anyways, Congrats & Howdy...

I have a 1988 944S 16V engine that I don't need any longer if anyone's interested. Head's in great shape with new tensioner and pad. Lots of other parts from it as well. #2 rod bearing went out, but the rest of the motor is good.

I got it for less then half the asking price..... I didn't find it on Craigslist, I was
driving along minding my own buss when I saw it sitting at a shop. It was right
down the street from my house.

The kicker is there was almost 20K worth of receipts in the glove box, about
10K from the last 2 years.. He had the timing belts done a few years ago,
nothing about the tensioner though..

I'm just about ready to put the engine back together. I have the new head and all
the bits that go with it cleaned, painted and ready to go.

2 questions, the head came with the cams in place, can I install the head with
the cams in the head? It looks like it will be difficult to get to the head bolts with them in place.
The other question is about torquing the head, I know 15 ft pounds
plus 90 degree and 90 degree is the spec. But does anyone use a torque wrench
instead on these? If so what do you shoot for, 75ish ft pounds or so would be my
guess if these were ARP studs. Also for real don't use oil between the nuts
and the washers like the book says, sounds odd to me....

Steve
