I read the story in Panorama and was blown away by the moxie of the intrepid travelers. Having my engine blow hours before the scheduled departure would have made me want to stay at home. Talk about a bad omen.

What I would like to know is how you find 60 days off to do that? I haven't had that much time off since I was a freshman in high school. And that was a long, long, long, long time ago.

Hi folks, thanks for the general positiveness. Here's some answers to the questions people have raised:

We considered/looked into permanently shutting the heater valve but as the engine was spending all day working hard at low speed, we decided that giving the cooling system all the help we could was more important than our (dis)comfort.

As for time off, everyone on the trip arranged it in a different way: I'm self employed so I had the option of just 'disappearing' for a couple of months. Laura did the trip by taking a year out from Medical school to come along, while Louise had just finished university and didn't have anything lined up, so tagged along. Tom works offshore, and so arranged for his months on dry land to line up and cover the trip, while Brummy took all his year's leave allowance (25 days, pretty standard in Britain) at once, and wrangled a month off work unpaid to make the 2 months.

After the post trip work issues, I was able to sort my business out, find some new clients and get back to a financial even keel; I'm being a bit more careful about who I trust when I leave on the next big trip in a few months however!

Ben.

Close. Next trip is 'V8Nam', an idea we dreamed up after a few too many beers: get a V8, drive it to Vietnam (from England again, and yep, going through China).

I'm taking a Corvette, while Brummy (from Team Shogun in Survival of the Quickest) is taking a 1978 Rolls Royce...

No way am I treating a poor '944 like that again!
