Thinking of moving on from the 944

I have had my 944 for almost two years now. I bought it in rough shape, I have been through two broken timing belts and a constant oil leak.
our region of the pca has a retired mechanic that has had 30 years experience as a head mechanic for porsche.
With his help he discovered my lower balance shaft gear was griving into the engine. I do not have any more leaks from the front of the engine but the car is still going through a lot of oil. My guess is I am getting blow by the compression rings.
I guess I will be looking for a cheap 1988 944 engine to swap in, the body of my 944 is not in the best shape, the side skirts are rusting and i have little bits of rust appearing on the roof, and side fenders.
If i can find a cheap replacement engine I think i will keep the car as a DD. I have been thinking of saving up for a Boxster S, I have been looking on ebay and for 10-15k seems to be a great many deals. I do prefer the body style of the 944 to the boxster but every one i have talked to so far thinks that the boxster is probably the best way to go.

I have the Craigslist android app where you can get notifications of any Boxster CL ad nationwide within a minute of posting .... I am shocked at the sub $7,000 prices for 97-99 986's.
Cylinder sleeve and IMS Failure be damned ...![Wink](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)
I would surely miss my back seats and back cargo hatch ...

I did a Porsche drive day with many of the then current models last year. The Boxter was one of my favourites of the day. Great little cars with fantastic handling. The IMS thing is a concern but there are ways of intercepting this.

I've never seen a Boxster that color before, it looks great with the wheels too!
We had a Boxster before we had our kid, it was a great road tripper, and decent at the track. Our was a base model, we were getting ready to make an offer on an S when we found out my wife was pregnant. She picked a Lexus IS 350 to replace the Boxster which she loves, and it has a back seat for little dude. Get the IMS upgrade and sleep well knowning that you've got one of the best sports cars for the money.
...but you will get crap about it being a girls car.

Also keep in mind that many of the cars Porsche designed are intended to consume oil. It's even in the owners manual of modern Porsches. My Cayenne Turbo goes through lots of oil and it's all concidered normal!

BMW has issued tech bulletins to explain why oil consumption is normal. If I can track one down I'll post it back here as it's an interesting read.

If you had enough blow by at the rings to really be losing oil like this then car would barely run. Much more likely that you have oil sneaking past your valve stem seals and burning off.
