OK, and now the final word on the issue...
It turned out that the nuts and bolts holding one of the exhaust headers to the rest of the system (the three bolts on the Wankel rotor-shaped flange) had shaken loose, presumably because of the extra vibration from the out-of-phase balance shaft. I wonder if I might also have not tightened them up enough first time around, given that the bolts on the other header were still good and tight.
So I tightened 'em up, and she's finally sounding as good or better than before! (Though not *quite* as good as the Mercedes C63 AMG Coupe Black series I was lucky enough to take out for a quick spin in on Friday. Boy oh boy, that was fun…)
