This summer, I have:

* Changed coolant hoses (I haven't done it in the 12 years I owned the car and even though they felt great I figured it was time)
* Retensioned the belts
* replaced the balance belt idler pulley (it didn't feel right when I retensioned the belts. It must have been a bad one)
* Changed transaxle oil
* Replaced O2 sensor
* Installed 931 vented nose panel

I'll be bringing it in over the next week to fix the AC. We think it is the expansion valve and I'm going to use the Visa wrench on that one.

The seat motor stopped working so, at some point, I'll dig in to that. I also need to see if I have the antenna amplifier hooked up right since I don't get the best radio reception. I'm not sure when I'll get around to all of that.

BB.

Re-build engine (man, for a single bullet point, that's a ton of time)
Replace front sway bar bushings
Install sway bar support bracket from Rennbay
Replace rear torsion bars with stiffer ones
Replace all the rear torsion bar bushes
Purchase and fit a set of phone dials
Purchase and fit a pair of bucket seats

Once all the above is done, it's off to get a cage welded in

Is it just me or is this thread terrifying anyone else on WHAT CAN GO WRONG? I love the 'replace 944 with 911' line above.

I'm actually making a lot of headway in getting mine completely sorted- not much left, but here's my DIY winter list (re: when the garage temps get below 90*F) before year-end:

Replace head gasket, possibly other little gaskets in the area where feasible while in there
Install new fuel lines, FPR, FPD, that other little hose
Install replacement electric hatch lock
Install replacement cruise control servo
Patch-seal one spot on the hatch at the top
Replace a side marker bulb and wiper blades
Steam clean the engine bay

What I've done in the past year since acquisition:

New timing belt, water pump (shop, need to verify tensioner!)
New belts and heater hoses (shop)
New turbo coolant pump and hoses
New coolant hoses, all
New heater control valve and hoses
New coolant reservoir
New rear half-shafts (shop)
Spot welded two minor exhaust leaks (shop)
New battery
New distributor cap and rotor
New plugs and wires
New ignition coil
Recharged the A/C
New battery cover
New Becker CDR-220 stereo and 4x 4x6" MB Quart speakers w/ AUX-in for iPhone
New iPhone console tray from Rennlister replacing the ashtray
New Lloyd's plain black floor mats
New cargo floor net (from a previous-gen Mercedes M-Class!)
Reconditioned original black paint with Zaino Z-PC (brought cond. from 6/10 to 7/10) and polished (Z-AIO, Z2 Pro)

Did you finally diagnose the head gasket for sure Chris? I remember you suspected it a while back but I lost track of that thread.

I was talking with some friends who own 993s the other day. Did you know that when we are shopping for hoses and oil seals and water pumps, they are shopping for trim pieces and aluminum gear *****? So unfair

This thread is making me feel a lot better about my list, and the work I've done so far...which I thought was getting out of control (until now):

-timing belt/water pump/reseal/cam tower gasket (this weekend hopefully)
-convert and recharge air conditioning
-find & fix hesitant acceleration issue (vac leak?)
-hopefully that will fix my fuel economy issue too (18-20 mpg right now)
-overhaul gauge cluster (dead bulbs, poor back lighting, bad ground connections)
-check ball joints/tie rods, get an alignment to tighten up steering
-fit better brake pads, replace fluid etc.
-upgrade headlights
-fix central locking short
-replace dead window switch
-track down drive train noises (rattling on cold idle)
-remove free play in gear lever

In the year and a half since I got the car, I have:

-replaced the small radiator port
-changed the oil (of course )
-replaced plugs/leads/distributor
-replaced oil pressure sender unit
-had injectors cleaned and resealed
-replaced fuel lines
-replaced the heater valve/all coolant hoses

Most things on my to do list are not that critical so I suppose I am not doing too badly after all.

But then these are the things I know about. I probably only know about half the issues my car has

I did it all myself

Last 18 months ... bought the car 2 years ago
replaced and tensioned all belts, replaced pulleys + tensioners
replaced water pump
replaced some coolant hoses
replaced lower balance shaft support + resealed it (fixed my leak)
resealed p/s pump

resealed throttle body
replaced TPS
had exhaust welded by a shop, also a rubber hanger was missing (fixed exhaust rattle)

replaced distributor cap + rotor
replaced air filter
replaced spark plugs
resealed sun roof
replaced hood shocks
flushed coolant
fixed heater leak
fixed e-brake spring mechanism

new tires (hankook ventus v12 ... so far they handle well)
claybar'ed the exterior (brought paint from 7/10 to 8/10)
put in some Porsche floor mats
new speakers (need new stereo!)

In progress (Have parts)
New hood insulation
New fuel filter

Now it runs really beautifully.

Nope, latest episode was fortunately just (yet) another hose! This one was going into the inlet pipe on the turbo. This better be the last one that bursts. I'm nearly positive I've replaced them all in the last year now... The head gasket is starting to seep oil pretty good on the one half under the intake manifold, exhaust manifold half looks perfect. Probably going to be the winter project. Not approaching a track until complete. Thanks!

Way unfair on those 993s.
