It's funny because many non-Porsche enthusiasts would believe the 944 to not be really 'track worthy' (known this from hearing people at various track events; I'm a photographer). Boy, are they wrong!

A few friends and I picked up a running 944 for a hundred bucks and went racing. We have about $2k in the car and are doing our 2nd race in August, a true 24hr at VIR. The car really is a great handling car and with everything stripped out of it is decently quick. I just picked up another 944 to use as a DD and it feels like a pig comparatively due to the weight and worn shocks.
It's a great car to learn in and is easy to drive at the limit. You really have to screw up to spin it. My 355 on the other hand is a little trickier but a lot more fun. It costs about what we spent on the whole 944 just in maintenance for a year, though.
