Ok, I got it appraised today, the nice lady came out to my house and did it for me as she lives nearby. I learned something about TX auto appraising. She said it will appraise for just under $4000, which is key in TX. Now, I can get the bond, go to the DMV, and do the title transfer.

I then got the first layer of crud off the engine, and out of the car. We can now answer the age old question of how many crushed Camel hard packs will fit in the rear pass footwell. It's 48. The PO was a real ***.

Glad to see you bring this car back to life! Too many in this shape are being parted out.

holy crap! 48 packs of cigs... does the interior smell at all? and your engine looks great already imo... Of course leave it to Ernie create a comparison, but hes not human so it doesn't count.

So with all the old service records, have you thought about calling the previous owners?

It's hot as hell now in TX so the car doesn't seem to have much of an odor. It's been sitting for 5 years in the sun.

I won't try to contact the previous owner on the receipts until after the title is out of suspense. I think it's 2 years. Don't want any potential mixups in ownership.

I have a rad and fan on the way, TB cover is coming, and the rad hoses should be here late this week. Next week it should have everything needed to start it. Found out why the fuel pump isn't working. Someone removed fuse 34 which is the fuel pump and sender fuse. The hoses to the injector rail are loose, so that may be a safety way to disable the car. If the pump runs, I'll find out when I get a batt in it.

Curious if you had a CarFax pulled on the car. It would be interesting to see what's on that report.

No carfax, but I got a title report from the appraiser. It shows a lien in 2000. I'm not a big fan of carfax.

Yeah if you can't find a 968 reference nearby, I may be your best bet! Would be glad to meet you in Grapevine some weekend for you to check things out. Maybe in another month- mine is currently down as I overhaul the cooling and fuel systems. Well done so far and keep it up.

+1

CarFAX is not always 'aware' when a car has had body damage/repair.

Thanks, welcome over. With only 12,400 built from 92-95, they are rather rare, and not a whole lot are RHD. Porsche never made money on them. They were just too costly to build and the price competition from Nissan, Toyota, and Mitsu were just too tough to beat.

Tease

Sounds like a smokin' buy - I'm a little jealous

I found out my 944 had a new (under 11k miles on it) clutch by going through the paperwork after buying the car on ebay. Love finding the good surprises!

My great deal took a nasty hit to the pocketbook today, courtesy of the state of TX. Since I got it without a title, I have to get a surety bond to cover the eventuality that the car may be reclaimed by the title holder. OK, that's fair, I'm not trying to get one over on anybody.

Now, the actual value of the car is what I paid for it. Or - it is the fair market value which would be slightly higher than my price. Or - it would be the value placed on it by a third party appraiser, certified by the state. Or - it would be taken from the NADA guide, given it's mileage, condition, age, etc. Or - it would be based on a completely arbitrary, and made up number that comes from the state comptrollers office, which is completely meaningless to this vehicle.

Yep, last one. They are valuing the car for bond purposes at $23,898. So, I need to get a surety bond to cover the standard presumptive value of the car, with no allowance for mileage, condition, age(except if it is > 24 years). Technically, I could wait another 5 years and get it lowered, but I'm not gonna park if for 5 years. Looks like the damage will be about $400 over what I figured before. Shyte, this state pisses me off sometimes.
