45mph does sound like you're changing a bit early though.

what about the thought that this wears your clutch more, and it is more costly, and in our cars more of a pain, to swap the clutch than the brakes?

Most of the time when I drive it I just go around the neighborhood because my car needs some work, so I don't feel safe driving it long distances. Since my trips are so shot, the engine doesn't warm up all the way. When my engine is cold I shift at lower RPM's. When I get this thing back on the road I'll see what it's like when it's warmed up.

I went ahead and took up Van's offer and bought his turbo transmission (for an amazing price!), so we'll see what the gearing is like once that's installed.
