Default Tool List for 944 work

As I contemplate my next purchase (tool wise), I thought...why not post and ask from those that have been around awhile longer in our cars about tools.

Aside from picking up a standard kit (metric), what else would complete the "944" tools to have? And, not have? Aside from what's on Clark's of course...

The reason I post/think about this, is a guy has up his "European mechanics tool set". And, mother of god...it's massive! LOL! What I'm thinking is if we could come up with some sort of "master tool list" for our car, that would be super great for us now, and especially for those in the future. (and, if I have to run to the auto store ONE more freaking time because I missing ONE stupid wrench...I may just throw a beer at a neighbor kid).

To start:

torque wrenches (3ft to a 5ft)
Metric set (from 1-??) and what wouldn't we need?
hammer (aka attitude adjuster for car)
torch
jack stands
jack
beer fridge

A buddy of mine might! Mine actually is perfect, though...I didn't do the seal behind that yet (the one piece out of the kit that was missing). I will let him know!

Ya know, I forgot the most important thing about why I posted this in the first place...

I meant 944 specific tools! Like, the spanner wrench, or the P2901, or the rear wheel bearing tool, etc etc.

So...go!

I kinda want to start collecting these, especially if they come up on CL or fleabay. Since, well...I'm going to own a 944/951 till I croak. Might as well start collecting while I'm young (ish)

It's not 944 specific, but there's this tool that a friend has nicknamed the "BFW" = BIG F@#&IN WRENCH, its just a huge set of channel locks and comes in handy like you won't believe lol.

Hollywood D's suggestions inspired me to post one.....

One of my favorite tools ,but not 944 specific, is a ratchet that is 3/8 drive about 1 foot long but also extends to about 18" long. Its a stanley IIRC. and find that it alone can break most bolts loose when I am taking something apart.

As far as something specific must have in a 944 tool box.....a box of bandaids and a flask of your favorite adult beverage. You will need both and often.

Whenever possible, consider sockets & box wrenches that are 6-point instead of 12-point. Do a much better job at preventing bolt head rounding. I have a dedicated set of 6-point wrenches in my brake bleeder box; haven't rounded a bleed nipple in years.

Another good set of tools to consider for DIY efforts is the SIRS bearing tool set, and a Cooling System Pressure tester (get one that attaches to the overflow bottle just like the OEM cap).

I didn't read the cross post thread, but I would suggest getting a 1/4 inch metric ratchet set with sizes 6mm to 13mm. Craftsman has a set and can be found on sale for like $20-$25 and includes a few deep sockets. I use this alot for smaller stuff and comes in real handy. I don't know how I got along without it.

that's what I'm talking about...off the wall stuff like the bearing job. I plan on doing bearings if I still have the car maybe buy summers end. There is no play, and everything is fine...but its one of those maintaining gigs that I like done...

good call on the coolant tester. I'll ad I plan on an oil tester too. I'm also going through the shop manuals to figure out off the wall stuff as well. Like; seal puller. I didn't really need one when I did my car, did a friends car and...mother of god. Language was an art form that day (had beer handy). REALLY coulda used it that day! (seal puller).

Do they make a tool to pull woodruff keys?!?! I dunno about you guys, but working on the early cars is a bitch...I'm not gunna lie to kick it here...lol
