Default Gearbox mount removal

Hey Guys,

I took the helpful advice here and ordered a new box for my S2, while it is in transit I spent the few hours removing the old box so the car is ready for the new one to be installed when it arrives.

Everything went smoothly and all is loose. I removed the 2 nuts holding the mount to the box but cant for the life of me free the bolts which push through and hold it in place. Im working on a garage floor and have tried everything from supporting it with a jack to plain old lifting the box myself but after 140k miles there is just no budging the holding bolts.

There is also so little space to work with that hammering them through seems impossible. Does anyone have a handy little trick to get those buggers out and free the mount so the box can drop?

Hopefully someone can chime in while im still covered in dirt so I can just wizz back under there and get the job done..

Cheers!

Assume you're referring to the two long bolts (100 mm) that connect the transmission to its mount. As an alternative, some folks will remove the two bolts (M10 x 50) that attach the transmission carrier (cross piece) to the car frame. Good luck!

If you take off the passenger rear wheel a long extension can reach the end of the bolts to tap/push them through.

Like Kevin said, remove the crossmember, very easy. Then you'll have all the room to work on those bolts.

Cheers for the suggestions guys.

I tried to remove the crossmember bolts but they seem to want to be there for life. With a breaker bar attached it mangled the 1/2" extention and the bolt refused to move.

I will try the suggestion from arthropraxis and try and whack them loose after taking off the rear wheel.

I have about a week until the new box arrives so plently of time to get it off and all cleaned up under there. Its all soaking in WD40 right now so at first light ill give it a whack!

Thanks again all!

You may want to try some PB blaster, it works a ton better than WD40. I learned this when soaking my speed and ref sensors in WD and having no luck budging them. Then I tried PB Blaster and there they went.
