Default Don't Shoot a 911 guy for asking dumb 944 Q's :)

I am considering a 86 944 Turbo. With 150k on it. Fairly decent service records back to 95.

But I have zero ideas what to look for model specific on this.

I have seen this Q on the 993 and 996 boards all the time. A FAQ would be great for all models on "I am buying XYZ...what to look for"

What are things to look for on this year model etc??? And yes i have read a lot in the past few days on this section

Thanks in advance

between this subforum and clarks garage you should find more than you ever wanted to know.

good luck on the endeavor. what is the anticipated usage?

Third: Will be for fun. Weekend fun car.

Rob: Nah. PCars all around are cool. I never bought into the argument of Water vs. Air cooled etc. They all have the good and bad points. In the end nothing sounds like a Porsche And is as fun to drive

Tim, you've likely discovered this by now, but the basic difference between an '86 951 and all the later ones is that the wheel offset changed to support ABS (though not all cars have ABS). '86s can wear Fuchs, later cars have roughly the same offset as a Boxster or 996, so most wide wheels work.

There are relatively few factory configuration options, which Clark's Garage covers nicely. M030 gave the cars bigger brakes and slightly stiffer suspension, while the Turbo S (or any 1989 or later 951) has a K26/8 instead of a K26/6 and a slightly stronger transmission.

In my opinion, you should try to buy the cleanest car you can find with a recent clutch and belts.

Charlie

Looking thru now. I am going to put "Butt in the Seat" tomorrow. May put it on my lift to. Then a PPI.

For the cost it is not much BUT as we all know the repairs can cost more than the car. My 993 TT began to eat me alive in "little" 5k repairs. And I do all the work I can on my own.

If it's running well, I suspect that you'll really enjoy it. Take some pictures, and post your findings here: https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turb...bo-s-forum-72/

(That's the actual 944 Turbo forum -- there's a little more technical traffic there).

Yep. The two cars contrast eachother beautifully. It really is astonishing Porsche made such different cars back then. (Seriously, if you debadged both cars and asked someone if they were made by the same company, they'd go, are you nuts? Today on the other hand - well we won't go there )

Both the 911 and 944 are great cars. IMHO the '86 is the best year for the 944 Turbo, its the lightest.

Very cool you have a 993TT! You ever drive it in the snow or ice? I have one too, its just a little small for me (18 times smaller than yours......). You'll be spoiled by the sound of that car, but, as you say, the 944 has its strong points

Oh - and even better to hear you do your own repairs whenever possible

Good luck!

Take care!

Hi Tim,

There is a strong local contingent of 944/951 guys on the Front Range with a lot of knowledge about these cars. If you're not afraid to turn a wrench (and it sounds like you're not) you should be in great shape to have fun with your new toy. Hope to see you at Cars & Coffee sometime soon!

PS Careful with Docwyte or you may end up with a sound from under the hood that you might not have intended

944s and 968s are very nice kit car tubs.

the engines are a few rpms over the poverty line.
