Default rear of a 944

what are the rear quater panels made of? i've using my 944 as a test basis to learn how to paint a car before it gets junked. i sanded the paint down and it looks like fiberglass. i thought that maybe it's some kinda bondo, but after tapping both sides it sounded more like fiberglass everywhere as compared to the metal front fenders.

are they fiberglass or did my car get cmpletely coated in bondo?

Coated in bondo. It is metal. Or at least it should be.

Hey 87 944, It's galvanized steel. We use Glasurit epoxy primer to prep 944s. ...and yes the quarter panels have probably been slicked to straighten out some work that had to be done in the past in order to repair the dent or dents in the quarter. Obviously I can't be there to see the previous repair/paintwork but it may not be as alarming as you think. Many high-end shops slick the panel in order to block out a super straight finish. We've seen some of the most pristine examples of the 944 roll through our collision facility that end up having filler and/or primer/filler in the panels when we strip them down for repaint. Quite common for all Porsches that are this old. Cheers

When I took my panels off I found the same thing. Don't be too alarmed.

Yep. All Porsches were fully galvanized starting in MY1977 (with the exception I believe, of the front fenders on early 924s). One of the first companies to do it. Audi didn't start until the nineties. Which is weird, because all 99.9% of 944s started at the Audi plant.

As a marketing gig I think at Weissach they left a galvanized, but un-painted Targa roller outside for the better part of a decade.

To the OP: Whats wrong with your car? I may be interested in what's left if it rolls.

Take care!

engine fire, it's been stripped of anything worth something, just a test bed for painting at this point
