I usually give a wave and a headlight or fog flash. You can usually tell, by the year and model, whether you'll get a response. The older cars, of any model, will almost always give a headlight flash or wave back. Boxters, Cayennes, Caymans, and Panameras almost never respond, other than maybe slowing down, because they think I was just signalling that there is a cop ahead.

I wave or flash to other 924/944/968 when in my 944 if i see them in time, most flash or wave back. I got a wave once even from a guy in a Ferrari 355. Also strangers come up to me to talk about 944's , a couple of days ago a delivery guy started talking to me while in traffic,moris minor owner. Once i had the pleasure to stop and help a fellow 944 owner in distress ,some mechanic failed to install the oil cooler housing right and was loosing coolant. P-car ownership is great .

panamera/cayenne people don't even know the 944 exists...anyone 964 and down waves/waves back around here.

In my 924S I'd wave and the only others who would wave would be 924's, and some older 911's. Newer Porsches but ESPECIALLY 944's would just either give me a blank stare or take two seconds and ignore my wave... by 944's I mean 951... hehe.
In my 986S I get waves from anything Porsche.
