Idea For Cheap Rear Coilovers
I just had an idea for cheap rear coilover shocks. Since our rear suspension is essentially from a Super Beetle will super beetle helper spring shocks work to act as coilovers for our cars? I have found them for pretty cheap and if they will actually fit the only problem I can think of is there is no performance shock for them and performance is the reason for going to the rear coilover in the first place.
I have also seen helper spring kits from places such as jcwhitney that clamp onto the shock body. I know they sell cheap usually not the best quality stuff. I am just thinking out loud for a cheap rear coilover alternative.

Cheapest are probably the Ground Control sleeve-over rears with Koni shocks. Still around $600 each though.
If the beetles fit they would probably only be good as helpers and not full coilovers as they have rubber bushings. Helpers are good for about a 100# spring and work with the torsion bars. Full coilovers will work without torsion bars.

I saw this once on a 924 in the junkyard. Was going to buy them but didn't have enough $ on me at the time. Thought it was interesting and have always wondered about those. Shocks were still good.

Still just thinking out loud. What about something like this coupled with some springs with a known rate. If I did it I would tack the spring cup on.

I would bet three or four dozen nickles that the "slip-on" coilover sleeves for the front (like SPEC uses) would fit in the steel trailing arm shock mount. Come up with an upper spring perch and you'd have a convetional coil-spring type rear suspension.

I bet that would work.
Now I'm thinking that if I stitch a bead of welds all the way around the shock body on the bottom I would have a perch for the sleeve to rest on and adapt an upper perch like ground control on the top.

Looks like they just cut a groove for a snap ring instead of welding.

Lots of good looking ideas in this thread. Anybody willing to donate a blown rear shock for me to experiment on?
Also what is the diameter of the koni rear shock body?
