Is there any general guideline, by reaching certain mileage, the engine and transmission of a 944 n/a would need a rebuild or overhale?

when they die. as long as the trans fluid is changed every 50k or so, it shouldn't need a rebuild. the engine, unless u feel something wrong, like knocking internal to the engine, or lack of power and end up with a low compression on a cyl or 2, then again, it never really needs to be rebuilt. somethings over time in the engine should be done. main bearings being one of em. though they are coated in oil, they still wear out. next time a timing belt is dont have them do front seals and maybe some of the pulleys. maybe next clutch do a new rear main seal.

I would suggest you ask your mechanics opinion.

I also noticed you have been looking at a 968 and others with high mileage.
Many cars with current records and receipts can go for over 300,000 miles.
If you find a seller that has only verbal information, the odometer busted and the CarFax is negative probably should be avoided. Run if the seller is flipping the car ---example, girlfriend, dead relative, recent trade, car parked on side of road with a "For Sale" sign, a "Pop Up Dealer" in an empty lot.
If you find a car you cannot resist, have it professionally inspected--again by your mechanics. This is called a PPI-pre purchase inspection. Well worth the money.

When to rebuild?
A direct answer is any engine with poor compression and leak down results.
A clutch that is still OEM
An engine with scored cylinder walls inspected with a Boroscope.
Rod bearings should be changed at about 125 to 140K miles or sooner if the oil & coolant mixed.
968 pinion bearings had a bad history...

Again, ask your mechanic and have the car inspected-PPI.

ferrari's don't have the whole engine rebuilt, just the head. when i asked i was not told why, something with what the valve's are coated in. pain though for a belt, engine out. i mean not a hrad thing to do, 4 bolts and 5 wire connectors up top, but still, stupid
