Default 84' 944 transmission grinding

My 944 was running fine all day, and I had been driving for about the last half hour with no problems.

I back up out of my friend's drive way and put the car into first gear to drive off down the road, however when I gave it some gas and released the clutch, I heard an awful grinding noise from behind me. The car shook back and forth violently and didn't go anywhere... so i was forced to call a tow truck.

I couldn't get the car to move in first gear or reverse. The engine runs fine and I can put the car into gear, but when I try to move the grinding noise reappears and the whole car shakes....

I've only had the car for a few months now and this the only thing thats happened since i have owned it.

I would appreciate any ideas on what is going on here and how much a repair could potentially cost.

Tom.

first, check the axels- if one is broken that would do it. IF the trans is bad i have a nice 84 n/a trans laying here that i can't seem to get rid of.

I agree it sounds more like the axles than the tranny. And no worries, if xsboost90 does not have axles from the '84 I have a set from a '84 in my shop. I am sure you will get back on the road one way or another.

Just start with the basics and post what you find.
