You would be able to fish it out with something. A whole cap would not make it into the oil pan.

this is the biggest to do about nothing—
chances are, the screen's already half clogged with 25 years of engine mud and sediment.

Yeah, after 140k+ miles, the screen could probably use cleaning- I may have that done at the next interval next month. And the filler neck tapers at the end so a whole cap is easily fishable (as would be the whole paper seal under it) and wouldn't make it inside.

Phew...

I've never dropped the foil seal but about a year and a half ago I took an oil sample and the first try did not at all go well. The tube that I used to draw the oil out got sheared off by the bottom of the dipstick tube so I now have about 2 feet of plastic tube in my oil pan. I'm not a fan of it being in there, but I'm not willing to open up the non-leaking oil pan just to get that out of there. So, is it a big deal? No. Again, I don't like foreign objects in my oil pan either but it's not worth it to me to open everything up just for that reason. Just wait till you do your next big maintenance to get any debris out. Although an oil change would probably work for something as small as some foil.

Thanks, Landen- I'm due for a change very soon and may have them clean the screen and/or/if anything else possible without replacing the pan gasket yet. That'll probably be end of year. Have driven it a couple more times since and all is still normal without any strange signs.

Have you ever actually had an AOS off of a block?...

I don't know how an oil cap managed to end up in your oil pan, but it sure as hell wasn't via the AOS.

You're fine. Don't worry about it. You can't even verify that it entered the AOS, so you are psyching yours elf out.

Haha, I'll gladly accept that.

That's a smaller cap than I have, btw- most quarts of oil have a cap roughly 1.75" in diameter without the little fins inside.

Wow when was the last time we discussed caps and debris at this length!?

Only if they follow your advice for oil change intervals.

I see more of the smaller caps, than the larger ones. Only the gallon jugs of oil in my garage have larger caps than that.
