Hey guys I've read some interesting insight on removing the rubber damper and flexplate from an automatic car and installing the pressure plate and worn clutch from a 5spd into it.

I was wondering if I could get more detail into this setup? Also does the auto car shift normal afterward? Thanks for your time.

The benefit is knowledge my friend... Also the wife wants an automatic still so if I get an auto car I wish to do this so I won't have to deal with that expensive damper.

Also this is off the topic but Ramius are you a Christian? Just saw the Isaiah scripture.

This is doable - I have done it before.

You use a decent-shape NA flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate and bolt it up in place of the flex plate. The bellhousings are the same. You don't need the throwout bearing/fork/guide tube.

The benefit is that this becomes a solid coupling between engine and driveshaft whereas the rubber disc had some wiggle in it. Some people report shifting being a little firmer but it isn't so bad.

Does an auto 944 shift fairly well? I would like to drive one just to try it.

I have driven a few over the years. Honestly, I haven't paid much attention to the shifting because every time I drive one I'm shocked by how slow they are.

Somewhat OT, I wonder how much more of a PITA it would be to source/install a 968 tiptronic. Just adding a 4th gear would make any of those cars considerably faster, even if you didn't/couldn't utilize the tiptronic feature.

And totally OT, one of the reasons I married my wife was because she knew how to drive a stick. Now she has more gears than I do!

OT. Same thing with my wife, except now she GIVES ME the gears when I spend too much money on the cars....

And, the automatic shifts smooth like butter. For sure one of the best ones I've ever driven.

I too will prolly do the change over, even if it is supposed to be more of a slam into changing gears, don't matter. That flexplate is redonkey expensive.

Why not just teach the wife to properly handle a stick?

Or perhaps outsource the training.. I am sure someone would be willing to teach her to properly handle a stick...

I am in the process of doing the change over myself. It is recomended that you use a rubber center clutch disc witch I have found. and a pressure plate and flywheel without a ring gear on it. Bought a ring gear and it doesnt fit. I think its a turbo gear because it has 132 teeth and doesnt match the PP or flywheel. Back to the drawing board. My experience with Ebay hasnt been good at times.

The wife has her heart set on automatics, I've tried to teach her a manual and she can drive one ok but has no desire or care to even pursue it any further. Since we live in Virginia Beach the traffic doesn't help her desire either, when we lived in the middle of no where she was more interested.
