hey guys, I'm trying to decide right now what tires to put on my rims.
I have decided to go with 255/40/17 205/50/17
Right now the two i have been comparing is the
Continental Extreme Contact DW
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2
Do any of you guys use these or have any recommendations? I would prefer them not to be offshore

i know the michelin pilot sports are amazing but for a street car IMHO its to expensive. you can find a good quality tire that is sticky and last longer for way less. last time i looked a pilot sport was way over 150 a tire. i use falken 512. i love them and i use a 225/45-17 on my 7.5in turbo twist and a stretched 235/45-17 on the 9in. they are good IMHO and i got them for 78 bucks a piece.

I'm running Pilot sport 3's on the front and continental's on the back.
The pilot sports have fantastic lateral grip and make it turn in a dream, even in wet weather.
The conti's have fantastic straight line grip which leads to great acceleration and just a little bit of drift to let you know you're pushing your luck.
They both suit different uses, so it really depends on your driving style.
That said, I think the conti's would give better emergency braking grip.

the Conti people are your Michelin engineers. the contisportcontact 3's are Pilot Sport clones.
awesome tires for the price.
my favorite tires based on quality/price... yep. why i run Dunlop and Conti tires.

The only way to know origin of manufacture is to look at the sidewall. Many of the well known and trusted tire manufactures have moved production overseas or outsourced it. Tires I just put on the fiancee's car have one brand on the sidewall and in small letters near the rim says "manufactured by Sumitomo". At least they weren't made in China.

My Z3 has 17x7.5 and 17x9 and the factory sizes for those were 225/45/17 front, 245/40/17 rear. That combo works really well. You really don't want to have too much of a difference between the two.
If you want best grip, go with some Dunlop star specs. The Continentals are a good overall tire that should last you quite a while. I'll probably end up with a set of Contis when I am ready for some new rubber.

I tend to like factory recommended sizes, because you know, they did design the suspension and the tires play a huge role in that. I just mentioned that BMW set the Z3 M Roadster (which is a staggered 17" setup) to what I mentioned above and it's a fantastic ride. I am more of a non-staggered type of guy, but I can't argue with the stock sizing.
Tirerack reccomends the 255/40/17 and 205/50/17
