Default car won't start, help!

I took my rad out to fix the drain plug leak. anyways put it all back together and now it won't start. I checked the spark plug wires they are correct. 1342.

I checked the timing belt it is fine and hasn't jumped. I switched dme relays still no start. I checkecd the speed and ref sensor connections and still no start.

the car seems to be cranking slower than usual.

tach barely moving but then sometimes all of a sudden jumps to 1000 rpm and then barely or no movement again.

I think my battery is a bit low but I fear it is my ref or speed sensor.

which one fo these sensors would cause no tach bounce? and how risky is it to replace them. I heard they can break then you're screwed?

I need to get my car back on teh road asap as it's my only car. it's been fine for so long now.....

what's a J boot?. the rubber boot going to the maf? I checked it and it seemed fine.

i'm wondering if it has someting to do with me taking out the rad or if something just failed while up on stands like the ref sensors.

when I crank it the tach won't bounce but then suddenly it bounces to 4-5 k rpm or somethimes lower.

could it be the maf? the only electrical connector I took out was the connector to the maf. would that prevent it from starting? I checked to make sure it was connected again.

grounds first. (all of em).
could be cold solder for the dme
spark? air? fuel? tested?
check the rotor and make sure the screw is still on tight
under the jboot there is a vac line that can mess with you (it sucks) make sure it's on dolphin butt tight

not sure where all the grounds are.

I will check the rotor tomorrow. today I just checked camshaft timing/ belt. ignition wires, and connection to the maf and checked ref/speed sensor to make sure the connectors weren't loose.

what is the best way to check for spark/ fuel.

the engine seems to be turning a bit weak could be from all my cranking.

I'm thinking it's teh ref sensors as the tach won't bounce and then all of a sudden bounces.

I was going to get the bmw replacment sensors and try and swap them out tomorrow night and see if it fixes the no start.

I will check the connections to the j boot again tomorrow. if one is leaking a tiny bit would it prevent the car from starting? i would think it should still start but run rough.

All those main questions can be answered on clark's garage.

spark is easy. Grab a screw driver, pull the first plug wire out of the engine, shove it in, lay it down. Start the car. If it's sparky mcsparkson's. You have spark.

Weak could be battery. Get your testor out.

Hunt for the shop manuals online, or even the haynes has the ground locations. Google it too, type in :

"Porsche 944 ground location" then, click on images. Comes right up.

fun stuff!

okay thanks. my speed and ref sensors are 26 years old so i'm going to get those anyways just incase.

I think my battery or starter are a bit weak also but I don't think that is what is preventing it from starting as it cranks but doesn't want to start at all. a few times it sounded like it almost wanted to start.

yeah, old ref sensors could be the culprit.

Also, the connector butt ends of those get COOKED. So, fyi.

Clean all those contacts man, battery posts, under the car (starter), everything.

Spend the day tomorrow with a wire brush, some coke and baking soda. And a nice 6 pack of beer and tunes and have at it.

You'll be good to go in no time.

it's so strange. the car was running fine for so long. then I jacked it up and took out the rad and put it back and now it won't start. I removed the maf and coolant hoses and the wires going to the temp sensor on the rad. dumb question, but if i accidently connected teh wrong wires to the three terminals on the rad temp sensor this woudn't cause a no start right? i'm pretty sure I got the right. the original connector is not there any longer and there are three separate wires going to the temp sensor on the rad.

The radiator temperature sensor is used to control the radiator cooling fans.
Take your battery to the auto parts store an have it fully charged and load tested.

I have it on a trickly charger right now. i'm going to let it charge for a few hours. i'll have it tested later also. I don't think it's the battery, it cranks fine but bit slow.

I am going to clean battery and ground contacts right now and check the maf boot again.

my coil wire popped out of the boot a month ago and I just stuck it back into the boot and it was running fine like that. i just checked it and it hasn't popped back out.

i'm also going to try and check for spark tonight. I read online that you can use a timing light? I have a timing light so I want to try it to see if I get spark to the wires.

slow crank is the battery on it's last leg of life or the starter on it's last leg.

I have both.

Dun judge, I like to gamble

LOL!
