Yeah, Just go through the list.

Battery first.

If you have another 944 buddy in the area, drive over, slap his/her's in and fire it up.

It's all about crossing off the usual suspects. If it is the battery, go with Interstate, Porsche or Optima. Seems to be the tendency...

Red face

charged the battery for 2 hours and no start. it's not the battery it is cranking fast enough to start the engine.

I also took the j boot out and could smell fuel. would there be fuel if one of the crank sensors was bad, but no spark ?

I cleaned soem connections with contact cleaner. I took the cap off and cleaned it and also the rotor.

also I have my wires 1 -3 -4 -2 going clockwise from 1

cranked it again and it cranks faster with the battery charged for 2 hours but no start and tach doesn't bounce and then suddenly bounces up for a second and goes back down when i'm cranking.

I have 2 sensors now bosch equivalent 12 141 710 668 (not bosch though) for a bmw 325 which I read somewhere on rennlist that is suppose to fit the 944.

i'm a bit hesitant trying to pull the old ones out as the space is so small and I might not be able to get them out or might break them.

would the crank or speed sensor result in gas but no spark or wrong ignition timing? also which is more likley to be bad speed or ref sensor?

thanks

Yes, change both while you're there, cover the clutch hole with a rag or paper towel. it will either be easy peasy, or your going to have some fun fun fun times ahead figuring out how to get 2 now broken, and still fused to the bellhousing, sensors out

ah man I hope not. I got a shop to change my clutch a 3 years ago and they pulled the sensors out and they called me to warn me that they may break......... so i'm hoping it'll come out again.

i'm going ot just remove the speed sensor bolt and gently try and see if it moves up. there isn't really much space for my hand down there....... all the wiring from the harness is in the way. I don't think i'll be able to get a good grip at all.

ok, replaced both sensors. was really easy actually (they weren't stuck). and nope car won't start.

I also jumped the dme relay and I can hear the fuel pump running. i'm pretty sure the issue is no spark. I haven't actually tested for spark yet. i'll do that tomorrow.

I think I may know what is causing this. my coil wire (ignition wire going to distributer) end had popped out of the wire a while ago and I just pushed it back in.

I took the wire off and pulled the end off teh wire and the wire looks like it has gaps between where it conducts electricity (it's not actually a wire but some coating on some fibre).

i'm going to cut the wire to expose some good "wire" and connect it to the end (i'll have t cut the boot too). I'm going to buy a new wire but I want to test it tomorrow morning to see if it fires up.

my engine is probably flooded now so that won't help.

is it okay to depress the gas pedal while cranking to get the fuel out of the engine?

I just did my clutch and one sensor came out with ease. But the next one i couldn't even get out in the vice with a hammer! so i mean be careful, use lots of penetrating oil(dont get any on the clutch surface) and hopefully the corrosion gods like you.

okay guys just checked there is spark at the coil and then I checked number one wire and there is spark there also.

so there is spark, timing belt marks are matching, engine cranks, fuel pump runs when I jump dme relay and I can hear and feel fuel running through fuel line to the rail. also have tried 2 dme relays and checked fuel pump fuse.

i'm wondering if the cylinders may be flooded with fuel. i'm going take out the number one plug now to inspect the plug.

the spark plugs were replaced a few months ago with bosch coppers and gapped.

Do you have a Noid light to check the fuel injectors are being triggered by the DME/ECU?
Have you checked the fuel Pressure?

I kinda went through this too. Turns out my afm was filthy.

Popped it open, cleaned it.
Then, cleaned every sensor at the connector. (yes, the whole car).
*warning* some places won't use your afm as a core if you pop the top.

Also, it could be in need of adjustment.

I just actually bought a noid light kit today got to see if it fits my injectors though. also bought a multimeter.

would a bad afm cause the car not to start? I thought it would start but run rough.

my afm is pretty clean I checked it and I've cleaned it before. also cleaned the connection.

I did remove the afm before this no start problem started. but I'm wondering how likely is it that the afm just suddenly went bad when I took it out.

fixed! it ended up I had the wires on wrong. I checked again and even though I had the wires ordered 1342 the rotor was at number 3 when at tdc. I changed the wires and it fired up and runs smooth.
