Default Track tire pressures

I'm finally getting the S2 out to the track this weekend for a 3-day event at VIR, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Being new to the 944 at the track, I am hoping for some track-related advice in relation to tire pressures. The recommended cold tire pressures for the S2 are 36 front, 44 rear, which are quite high from what I'm used to.

For my Cayman the on-track goal is to get hot pressures about equal front to rear, somewhere around 36 psi. Is it similar for the 944? Can anyone recommend a good hot pressure to shoot for? And given the desired hot pressure, where should I start cold?

Thanks for anything anyone can pass along!

Good point. I had intended to inlcude this in the first post.

I am running stock size street tires (and stock brake pads): Bridgestone RE970 AS, 205/55-16 front, 225/50-16 rear.

Probably start 28 or 30 cold and see. You can just let some out afterward. Depends on the tire - but that is good start point.

See how they are wearing on the upper sidewall of the tire...

If you are wearing all the way down on the crown u are perfect...add a couple of lbs if it goes past the crown, take a few out if it doesn't reach the edge of the crown. Ask your instructor for guidance...but 28-30 is a good start cold, take hot pressures too

I was going to say this too. This is what I ran in my street tires on my 944. I would say 30 to start since it is a little colder right now (not summer).

Shooting for a simple "number" is difficult as there are many variables (ambiant temp, track temp, suspension setup, tire size/condition/brand, weight distribution etc etc.) To setup for the track you are on quickly, bring along some white shoe polish and put a dab or two on the sidewall of the tire right where the treads wrap around. Hit the track, come back and check the sidewalls and see if/how much of the shoe polish rubs off. Inflate/deflate as required to get the shoe polish to stay on near the edge of the tread. I'm simplifying this a bit, as different tires have different tread styles, and blocking that wraps around to the sidewall, but the idea is you want as much tread on the ground as possible in a turn. If any of the sidewall is rubbing, then inflate slightly. Then record the pressures, and use as a guide for your next event.

I had 16" Bridgestone RE050 tires on my 924S, and I found that 34 psi all around was too high for a cold track temp. I found that 30-32 psi cold gave better grip, but I'm not sure if it is the optimal pressure.

Thanks for the input, folks!

I'll be keeping an eye on the shoulder of the tires and see what works out. This will be a learning weekend for sure, and hopefully a fun one!
