laughing my f ucking *** off on that one.... but seriously, the 993 guys are so blessed yet they worry about crap like this !! if you do the math, at the current rate rate of consumption/replacement his oil should be changed at least every 30~80 k miles... but he might want to reach in and change the filters every 4~5 k miles or so.... nothing to lose any sleep over.

i guess everyone needs to worry about something. i'm worried about the future price of gas and whether or not the country can survive 5 more years of obama....

You don't know the meaning of never ending maintenance until you've owned a Lucas wired 80's Jaguar. I still have nightmares about my XJ12.

Truth. I have an '83 XJ6 in the family that constantly needs something...

BTW, the 1 quart of oil per 600 miles is in the owner's manual...

And why German beer is cold?

...Bosch make refrigerators too.

And why domestic beer needs indicators on the bottle to tell you it's cold?

...GM couldn't make a decent refrigerator.

My 1986 951 is pretty darn reliable. It should be, I rebuilt most of the mechanicals on the car over the past couple of years. It happens when it is 25 years old and has 92,000 miles. It could go a bunch of miles but of course I dont drive it too much. Mine is coming on 27 years old in September. Built in Sept 1985 and delivered October 1985. I wish I could rebuild me back to 1985.

But to the OP - yes it does end- in a way. You get to the end of the big things that can aggravate you and halt your fun and drivability. But you still find and see and fix smaller things . But by then those are more cosmetic and fun to do.

If you decide to start investing in it, it's because you decided to keep it for life.
Or almost.

+1

Anyone that thinks German wiring is bad has obviously never seen 80's British wiring.

I've seen a few 80's Jags before.... they were all burned, hollowed out shells.

Agreed.
I have 195k in my 951 and it runs great. I drive it daily, it still needs a few things but it's reliable, I've drvien 15k miles this year and no issues. Only time car didn't run is when I decided to do preventative maintenance.

During the 70's when they owned Frigidaire I think they did just fine. The auto AC systems were pretty good then also.

There is a reason people go out and spend $20K on a new Fiesta. They are more comfortable with a car payment and huge tax and insurance bills than they are with the incremental cost of dealing with an older car.

A new Fiesta might cost about $15K to own for 5 years. An old 944 might cost about the same, or less if you earn the difference by turning your own wrenches. You don't save the money, you earn it.

The purchase price does not mean much when buying an old sports car, you have to think in terms of what it'll cost to live with and compare that cost to what most people do: Buy a new or late model car from a dealer and have a car payment. Which would you rather have? For many the new car offers fewer surprises, less uncertainty. Lots of people simply would not budget for a $1200-$2000 repair bill for an old car either.

You can't be delusional and think you can buy an old car someone else is sick of and not be on the hook for some significant costs.

-Joel.
