Default 944 Road Test

i was digging through some of my older car magazines from the 80's (yes, i think i may still be stuck there) and i found a very interesting comparison test featuring the 944, among the 928, the Corvette, and the Ferrari 308 QV. if you ever wondered how good the 944 was in its day, you will have to look no further. sure it lacked the power of the other cars in the test, but the 944 made up for its shortcomings in being an all around great car. makes me even more proud to own one. sorry for the pics, i don't have an operational scanner.

Great offering. It reinforces why I'm on my 3rd 944. I wish I had a copy of the article in print. It's a good thing that they didn't evaluate the same cars where periodic maintenance over 20 some-odd years is concerned. The 944, especially now averaging the 120 k miles mark, is requiring a near rebuild of the entire car. Belts, All the rubber seals, boots, rod bearings, clutch, brakes, hoses, injectors, and the list goes on. While I agree that the other cars in the article, especially the Ferrari and 928 would have been probably much worse due to the complexity of the engine and drive train, the Corvette, due to its cheaper parts, ease of maintenance accessibility and basic maintenance procedures by the average "wrench" would have gotten high marks. Regardless, I love this '87 944 NA and while I'm restoring everything mechanical and cosmetic, I'll enjoy it for years to come because it'll be a re-newed, fuel efficient joy to drive that still turns heads.

the maintenance can be high on any 20 year old car. a lot of things on the 944 hold up far better than other cars. heck, the alternator and starter are original in my 944.

Eh?

There are several people here that have 300k+ mile cars that are totally functional and in nice shape.

Honestly, if you have a 25 year old car with only 120k on it it has sat around a lot. Cars rot when they sit, especially if out in the elements.

Polly not a single piece of rubber on anything made in the 80 that would survive well in the elements. Not. Porsche thing, just a timing of the technology thing.

I'm another one who keeps all the old 80's mags. December 1981 introducing the new 944. No road test but a 6-page review. I'll scan it one day.
