Default liftbar to jack up your car

There is a thread on RLOT called Jack stands solutions for Porsche which is worth looking at.

The point of the thread is the to find the best jack stand which won't damage your Porsche. While ESCO jack stands, at about $80 each, are a nice item, there is also liftbars.com

I have communicated with Ken from liftbars.com he said he would design a custom bar for 944/951 use as follows:

OK. I would imagine that the bar would fit around and into the round front
and middle jack points, and into the rear square one. The goal being solid
jack stand locations which are easily accessible.

If you go to the website you will see how the lift bars are used. He was trying to gauge interest in them - he was looking to charge $150 which I think is worth it.

Let me know if anyone is interested so I can pass it along.

Not seeing a big advantage... from the description, the proposed round buttons are not reliable jacking points.

Good picture - I will pass it along to him.

I think a bar like this will give some extra stability if it can be made to hit all of these good jack points.

Depending on jack stand placement with a bar, you would also distribute weight.

I thought the point of lift bars was so you could jack up a car from a point other than where you want to put jack stands (ie you jack in the middle of the bar and put the stands at the ends). No need for that on our 944s.

anyone else weirded out by the pic being flipped?

why shouldn't you use the outboard jack points up front?

I've seen the lift bars for the 928 before, and they look like a pretty clever idea.

I'm thinking with a bear the weight would be distributed more evenly and it would provide more stability.

As a kid I would crawl under a car with reckless abandon but now I am aware of the weight above my skull. I think a bar like this would make the job a lot safer.

So that is three sets of lift bars for you?

I sent the jack point picture to Ken over at liftbars.com to see what his comments are.

I don't see how it makes it more stable or distributes the load. It's still the same number of contacts points. But now you have the bar in between the stand and the car. Will be as stable or less stable, not more.

I don't agree. If you have three jack points tied together with a bar which ties them all together you are spreading the load. I also can't help but feel that the way the jack stand (with a V top to it) grips the bar lessens the chance of slipping.

Stick with your jack stands - you have to do what makes you feel more comfortable. I like this idea. Sort of like having a lift.

No load sharing if you have jack stands directly under the contact points. Load then goes straight to ground through the stand. Thought experiment- take a cinder block, hang a 2x4 off the end a few feet and stand on the end that is on the cinder block. How much of your load is traveling down the beam?

I agree with you, but when used with the bar the jack stands sit a little closer to each other spreading the load slightly to the middle point as well.
