This thread made me look up what the MSRP on my 86 944 Cup model was. Per Certificate of Authenticity, MSRP was $26,448. It came with 40% LSD, Club Sport package, etc. I was offered over $30K for mine last year. I still have it and plan to race it a bit this year.
That window sticker shows just shy of $32,000 with the few listed options, including LSD.
I have a copy of the window sticker for my '89 2.7L NA, it has basically the same colors and options, but is an AUTO and has no LSD and it was like $46-48,000 new. Seriously.

the 993 was the 'buy' of the '80s and '90s.

And that's where the problem lies, before you even get into maintenance and parts. Three years earlier you basically bought a race car, while the original owners of mine paid 80% more for a street car. My dad almost fell out of his chair when I told him how much my car stickered for.

very reasonable, even by '80s standards....
then 944 prices went through the roof during the next 5 years. even the
n/a cars got shockingly expensive ! leaving would-be buyers, dumbfounded.

This may be true, but my point is that there are a few 944-based cars that are now surpassing or getting close to its original MSRP. This is typically symptomatic of a car approaching its collectible phase (BTW, I'm not saying that all 944s are now collectible).

Agreed. The $/Deutschmark at that time became less favorable, IIRC, which contributed to the price increase. Porsche's overall manufacturing costs also became increasingly less competitive relative to other countries' costs i.e. Japan, etc.
