If 944S' came with 16" wheels as an option(they must have?), then use 16s with the stock diameter tire. Then you're still in stock class and you don't have the problem of weird space in the fenders wells.

You may be faster using a 23" tire though..

Plenty of tire. A while back some 944 spec guys tried 205/50 R15 on their cars and that is a little too small. With our super lowered cars it leaves very little space the ground especially on full compression. Run the risk hitting the oil pan over curbs. That is not an inssu unless you lower the car 2" and start running over curbs. That won't happen in autocross. Well at least the curbs you hit in autocross are ALOT bigger.

Changes are pretty strong you will be faster on 15" tires 225 wide vs 16" 225 wide. The 16" has poorer grearing and more overall weight. The major advantage of 16's over 15's is room for larger brakes, better looks and more availiabity in tires wider than 225. At though that supply is mostly moving to 17's these days.

17's for the street and 15's for ax tires.

That is part of the problem. There are not a lot of tire choices for 225/50R15 tires either. All of the good "street" tires with treadwear in the 140-200 range are only available in 205/50R15 and one that is available in 225/45R15. They are all 23" in diameter. 225/50R15 tires are 24.9" in diameter.
