No. Even if I lost my leg due to gangrene, I would just get a Cayman with PDK.

i have an auto 924s and when i first got the car it was fine for my "wife" to drive it to work with no worries.,and traffic was nothing to worry about. now 4 years down the road i have done alot to the car and its really starting to feel good.becouse of this i feel my left foot looking for some thing sooooooooo long story sort........... ATM i have a beat 83 944 sitting on stands in my garage about to have the manual dropped out of it.....

its all a matter of what you want it for, if you like the car and want your wife to enjoy it with you then go for it

I would own one... mainly for my wife but as its been said the car would really just be for relaxed travel since a NA 944 with an auto is slow.

I have an '84 5spd, '87 auto, and '90 cab. and think all are good cars. While the auto is no where near the cabriolet it is very comparable in speed to the '84. Maybe I just got a good one.

Not sure why you'd want a 944 auto if you already have an auto Jetta and GTI...

+1 on the E90

I own an 87 and i happen to like it , I think considering other automatic sports cars and the price of a 944 these days the 944 auto is good car to drive, yes it lacks power , but at least you get a nicely styled car that feels nice and looks good. The 968 auto is also a nice daily driver. And at today's prices there's good buys out there.

My daughters will be getting an automatic this year. They have another year till they will be driving it to get it all sorted out. They are learning to drive a stick but I want them driving auto the first couple of years on the road. Teenage drivers...keep it dead simple.

The problem with the auto 944 is its only a 3 speed.

They get beat so badly by the time we get them their lifespan is questionable...unless fully rebuilt....and then at best you have a slow tranny....perfect from the perspective of a parent letting 16 year olds drive a Pcar...but otherwise lacking.

okay well maybe you can all point and laugh and call me a dreamer...I dont mind....but I have considered or at least pondered to excess a tranny swap Id like to do eventually.

(putting on flame suite)

ZF 5HP19FL 5 speed auto
1st 3,67
2nd 2,00
3rd 1,41
4th 1,00
5th 0,74
Rev 4,10
drive ratio 3.73
Charts out to an almost negligible increase from a manual 5spd.

NOW before you tear into me...I drive a stick and love it..I dont like driving auto myself..but Ive had more girlfriends who couldnt drive stick than could....so it would be a nice second car in the stable, third really since the twins will have theirs long before I tackle this. I am completely aware, and am in no way suggesting that the swap would be a simple drop in affair....But its really the transmission an Auto44 should have.

My experience was not unique. We had four e46's here in the office. We used to meet at the coffee machine to have our bitch sessions. Three of us sold 'em and swore off the marque. The fourth is looking at other brands for her replacement.

Warranty was great, and I used the hell out of it. Eleven trips to the dealer in the last 18 months of ownership, and there was a long list of stuff wrong with it when I traded it w/79K on it. Receipts for repairs from 50K to 79K totalled over $10K. Ridiculous. Three power steering racks? Are you kidding me? No way on God's Green Earth I'd own a BMW without warranty. The only thing that never broke was the check engine light.

Former boss bought an M6. We warned him it was going to break. It did. He made it 10K before it was back in the shop. He bought an S63 while the M6 was broken, and I think I only saw the M6 one more time after that. He raved non-stop about the S63. He had the money for it, so good for him.

Screw BMW and the garbage they sell. BTDT. Horrible car.

This was pretty much an exercise in talking me out of a spontaneous decision. I wish they would have put something other than a 3 speed in there, I think that's the deal breaker for me.
