I've got a bare 16V head. It has had the tensioner tower repaired. I have the cam caps, but neither of the ladders at the front or the rear. To make it work, you would need to take your cam ladders, have them broached down, and have the cam bore line-bored. My caps would probably need to be line bored, as well. WOuldn't take a whole lot, and you could keep it an S. You'd also have to supply your entire valvetrain. I'd like about $200 for it, but I'm open to offers.

You mentioned that you bought a complete 8 valve motor over on Pelican. How many miles are on it? If it has a lot and you have a large budget, then it might be a good idea to rebuild it while it's out of the car.

Which is why it is best to look at the head gasket, which is the flow controlling device between them. And they use the same head gasket per Auto Atlanta (95110437402) and Rock Auto.
In other words, you CAN put a 16V head on an 8V block.

keep it the same and fix it. your goals for the car might also help you decide if you have the stomach to go all in with a same engine swap or engine upgrade. that block could be fine. but, unless i've missed something, sat 10 years doesn't exactly inspire great feelings about messing with this engine.

There's more to why holes are where they are than coolant flow. There is also manufacturing.

in the end, what all this fancy automotive engineering amounts to,
is an epic pile of junk with a fat bow with a Porsche Crest on top.....
an overgrown bucket of bolts weighing just about as much as a Goodwrench V8.

88 944S: Post a photo of your damaged head - the tensioner area specifically. Perhaps I can repair it for you.
As an alternative, 67King has made a very generous offer. It may even be simpler than he indicates since you may only have to address the front cam cap bridge - if any at all.
67King, Your head is an S, isn't it? The S2 heads have different water passages at the front.

My name is Harry, I'm a part-o-holic.
I'd love to see this S head get used. Had initially bought it to do a turbo 16V, until I got the 968 engine. Am hanging on to the rest of the stuff until I find out how light I got the race car, and will likely convert to either S2 or S to run as light as I can.

I was in the same boat with my 87S I bought not running with a broken head. I wound up getting one from EBay UK. It came with cams for a
pretty good price, shipping wasn't cheap though...
