I am installing a new clutch in my 944Cup car. I could only get one of the shims in the throw-out bearing in place. The old bearing only had one shim also. The bearing was snug until I torqued down the pressure plate. Now it is loose. I really don't remember if this was the case the last time I installed a clutch. Is this normal?

that is normal when the slave is not pushing against the clutch fork and pulling he release bearing. Our clutches work as "pull clutches". Once you connect the clutch fork and slave, there will be no play. the shims are there for only plung in the bearing play.

When I did the clutch on my son's early 944, I did not have the looseness. I do not remember how many shims I used.
But when I pulled the engine from my early track car, that TO bearing was loose. And to add further confusion, the TO bearing on the 1988 engine I picked up, to replace the one from the track car, was snug.
I know this doesn't help other than to provide more data points.

On my NA, the TOB was somewhat loose when I did the clutch. It was the original pressure plate and as far as I know the original TOB. It had a few millimeters of freedom (radial, away from center).

After my previous post, I was able to put a 3rd shim and eliminate all front-back play but it still had radial motion. The PP fingers were quite worn.
So I just bought a new set and it's already in the car (thanks RockAuto for fast shipping)
