Default Can you add a 3rd brake light?

I am on the hunt for a hatch that doesn't have a bent frame. I have found one, but it is on a 1983 944. There is no 3rd brake light. I would like to keep this if possible as my car is an 1986. Can you add a 3rd brake light or not? Is it hatch glass specific?

I think the black trim on the glass is different for ones with a 3rd brake light.

Absolutely and highly recommended. Available from PelicanParts or used.

The hatch on my 1986 951 has the third brakelight I would like to transfer that to the 83 hatch I'm looking at. What would be needed for this?

Joe is correct in that the black "paint" on the inside of the hatch is different, but the only thing that you'll be missing the the 4" x 3" (approx.) black box on the glass that surrounds the third brake light. So, install the light up there with some good double sided tape and you're good to go. However, without that black box you are going to need to come up with a way to hide the tape and the wires running from the light. The biggest thing is where are you going to draw power from? I'm not overly knowledgeable about electronics so someone else will need to chime in about where to get the power from. If it was me, I would try to steal power off of one of your back brake lights, but that may screw something up, I'm not sure. Good luck.

I swear Pelican has the DIY and sells the parts. Go search their site, it's a tech article.

I have the same issue. 86 951 with an older (and now leaking like the last one) hatch. The older model hatch will not have the tube for the wires running over to the third light. The paint could duplicated with, well, paint. As for as the wire dressing you could epoxy and paint a copper tube along the top using the old frame as a ref.

It mentions attaching the light with doublesided tape. I already have the 3rd brake light. Can I just order the double sided tape?

You can use double sided carpet tape. ALso the "black box" can me masked and painted on the inside of the glass first. Let it dry good then go with the double sided tape. The paint cold even be brushed on since the glass will control the exterior finish.
Sounds like the wiring is all in place on your car. You will just need to glue the leads up tight in the corner of the frame. you could apply a black mask there also prior to securing the wires. followed by an over bead of black silicone if you really wanted to hide them. I have a few 3rd lights I can pull if anyone is looking for one..
