88 951, 87 S. Both Crank but wont start. What is up with my cars right now!?!?!?
So yesterday the Turbo was driving down the road then It just turned off. Had to tow it home. So I insured the S and guess what it wouldnt start. Both crank but dont start. I can smell fuel and i swapped around DME's. The 944S has previously not wanted to start in the Rain and then would later. It wasnt raining when the turbo did the same thing.
Is there something common with these cars with like a distributor or some sensor or something? What is going on with my cars? Why doesnt my S like the rain?
Any one have same issue or know possible problem areas?

Is the tach bouncing? Have you checked the speed and reference sensors? Those are the most common no start problem sensors. They are on a bracket at the back of the intake manifold and many times the connectors get brittle and break.

Ok so It was dark out so I couldnt really check anything. But there is a little bit of tach bounce so it may not be the sensors. Tommorrow I will check the AFM and Spark.

I ordered the Ignition tune up from lindsey racing, after about a hour installing it she started back up and idled and ran way smoother! I discovered some oil around a spark plug so looks like theres something else im gonna have to fix!

the most nagging issues with 944s are, but not limited to, schizophrenic starting isues related to alarm, DME and wiring failures, having to spend thousands changing out timing belts, ps pumps, bent valves, all in an effort to preserve anemic, early '80s horsepower and performance....
the fix is to change to 968 or Goodwrench, LS power.

a common problem with our cars is simply lack of regular use and the age of some of the components. A lot of our cars have original injectors which are now over 24 years old !
If the car is left unused for a few weeks or the tank ran nearly empty the last time it was used , the fuel pump can often struggle to build up sufficient fuel pressure for the injectors to work properly due to lack of head of fuel .
The other contributary factor is often sticky injector solenoids. Akll the detergents and additives together with the odd bit of water can cause the injector filters to clog with the laquer and the injector solenoids to stick.
When you crank the car , aside from a spark and fuel pressure you should be able to hear the injectors clicking. if they don't they may need cleaning and testing.
injectors are normally self-cleaning but as a temporary measure its possible to use a PP3 9v battery to free up sticky injectors by touching the battery onto the injector connectors briefly 10-12 times until you hear the solenoid moving freely with a loud click. Basically you are trying to simulate the ECU pulsing
Aside from that poor earths are probably the most common causes of poor starting and running. It pays to locate and clean the important earths .
